Despicable Me 4 Leads as U.K., Ireland Box Office Hit $132 Million in July, But 2024 Sti

The U.K. and Ireland box office hit £103.3 million ($132.5 million) in July, marking the strongest monthly performance since December 2023, according to numbers from Comscore.

Despite this uptick, the year-to-date total remains 14% behind 2023’s figures, largely due to the absence of a “Barbenheimer”-level phenomenon this summer.

Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” led the pack with £28.2 million after three weeks. The animated sequel has already surpassed the lifetime gross of the original “Despicable Me” (£20.2 million) and is tracking 4% ahead of “Despicable Me 3” at the same point. It currently stands as the third-biggest release of 2024, behind only “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part II.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” landed at No. 2 with £25.3 million in just eight days. The Marvel entry from Disney scored the year’s highest three-day opening at £12.6 million and set a new record for 15-rated releases. Among superhero titles, only six films have opened higher in the territory.

Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” held strong at No. 3, adding £16.3 million to bring its total to £51.2 million . It currently stands as the highest-grossing release of 2024 and the sixth-best performing animated release of all time in the market.

Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” blew in at No. 4 with £9 million ($11.4 million), marking a career-best for British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones. Blak Bear’s horror pic “Longlegs” rounded out the top five with £6.2 million, establishing itself as the month’s top-grossing original release.

Paramount’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” secured the No. 6 spot with £5 million for the month, bringing its total to £9.6 million. It’s currently the year’s highest-grossing horror release.

Sony’s “Fly Me to the Moon” landed at No. 7 with £1.6 million, while the studio’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” took No. 8 with £1.3 million for the month and a £12 million total.

Rounding out the top 10 were Universal’s “The Bikeriders” at No. 9 with £1 million and the studio’s “MaXXXine” at No. 10 with £984,000.

Looking ahead, August brings a mix of family fare (“Harold and the Purple Crayon”), action (“Borderlands”), drama (“It Ends With Us”), thriller (“Trap”) and horror (“Alien: Romulus”). The box office is expected to gain significant momentum in Q4 with highly anticipated releases including “Joker: Folie A Deux,” “Venom: The Last Dance,” “Paddington in Peru,” “Gladiator II,” “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King.”
